Mike He crams for piano- and guitar-playing scenes in upcoming idol drama "Mei Le, Go"

Taiwanese actor Mike He may be musically illiterate in real life, but that is something that the veteran idol drama actor will need to mask in his upcoming role as a music producer and award-winning musician for upcoming GTV idol drama Mei Le, Go. Since the Taiwanese idol does not want to rely on a musical equivalent of a stunt double to take on his piano- and guitar-playing scenes for his latest role, Mike has diligently been taking music classes to get himself musically in shape. He might be facing a formidable task though, as the star of previous hit idol dramas such as Devil Beside You and Love Contract already nervously sweats from less than five minutes of practicing the piano with his stiff fingers.

The popular idol still has confidence in his own deep singing voice though, and since signing with major Taiwanese record label HIM International Music, which manages both singers and and actors/actresses, the actor has not ruled out the prospect of releasing an album. Yet Mike is completely lost when it comes to actual skills on the piano and guitar, and so the production team has enlisted a music instructor to teach him the ways of both instruments.

Mike does have musical talent in the family, as his younger sister plays the piano, but he himself has never touched a piano until he began learning it for his role for "Mei Le, Go". The actor began his lessons by slowly playing an extremely simple song of "Do Re Mi" with one hand, but due to his fingers stiffing up during play, Mike's finger motions ended up not matching what he was trying to think and thus reacting by yelling, "It's so hard!"

Switching over to guitar and playing an extremely simple chord, Mike's fingers began swelling up in pain, but his guitar instructor was not sympathetic about it and replied, "Your fingers aren't swollen enough. You need to practice until your skin starts to peel." Mike later went on to say, "I've wanted to learn how to play guitar long ago. After I finish this drama, I'm still going to keep learning."

With "Love Buffet" in December 2010 and "Hayate" in April 2011, will "Sunshine Angel" get a February 2011 release?

Taiwanese channel GTV is currently promoting the release of Reen Yu, Aaron Yan, and Calvin Chen's Love Buffet for a December 19th release, the long-awaited idol drama which has seen delays stretching back to the summer of 2009. News of Love's upcoming broadcast also comes approximately two weeks after the Taiwanese press released news of George Hu and Park Shin-hye's Hayate the Combat Butler having its own planned release in April 2011. Yet despite the fact that Rainie Yang and Wu Chun's upcoming idol drama Sunshine Angel, like fellow GTV idol drama Love, has already completed its filming, there has not been official reports of that drama's release.

The star pairing of Rainie and Wu Chun was earlier publicized by the press as GTV's desperate attempts to combat rival Taiwanese channel SETTV's comfortable years of ratings dominance, but GTV currently has the luxury to sit on the Rainie-Wu Chun drama at its convenience, especially given SETTV's recent ratings downturn in the post-Autumn's Concerto era. And with GTV's live action adaptations of Japanese manga typically spanning a broadcast period of roughly two to three months, there happens to be an available gap just as long between the broadcasts of manga-turned-dramas Love and Hayate.

Besides Sunshine, GTV's only other announced idol drama is Wu Chun's other drama Absolute Boyfriend with Goo Hye-sun, and that drama has only begun production very recently. Unless GTV plans to rush Absolute right after Love in order to save Sunshine for a rainy day, it is possible that Sunshine will be the follow-up drama to Love. The release schedules for Sunshine and Absolute themselves are just speculation based on the schedule gaps between Love and Hayate, but it is the best educated guess out there given what is known. Hopefully this will appease Taiwanese idol drama fans other there until GTV releases some more concrete information.

GTV's speculated drama release forecast
Love Buffet:
December 19, 2010 - February 2010

Sunshine Angel:
February 2010 - April 2011

Hayate the Combat Butler:
April 2011 - ???

Absolute Boyfriend:
after the completion of Hayate the Combat Butler

Weekly ratings recap

It was the end of “Zhong Wu Yen” and “Endless Love” last Sunday, but both finales did little to help the struggling shows' ratings. “Zhong” continued to place first with an average of 2.54%, while “Endless” moved up to second with 1.15%. The SETTV-produced “Channel-X” and American series “Gossip Girl” will take over their respective timeslots starting this Sunday. In third place was “Personal Preference” with 1.06%, followed by “4 Gifts” at the bottom again with 0.79%.

Back on Saturday, it was a quiet night for the usually dominating variety line up due to the 2010 Taiwan metropolitan elections. CTV in fact preempted “Variety Big Brotherand Mr. J Channel” to make way for election coverage. This might be a good thing for Mr. J and company, because considering their 0.51% average from the previous week, things weren’t looking exactly promising for them.

Mr. J’s former mentor Jacky Wu is also battling his own ratings trouble. His Saturday show “Super King” is said to be going off the air after its contract expires in late December. Two of its hosts, Zax Wang and Tony Sun, have already announced that they are leaving the show which further solidifies the rumors. Meanwhile, Wu's other show “Power Sunday” is still losing to “Diamond Club” and “One Million Star” despite getting a makeover three weeks ago.

Jay Chou promotes 'The Green Hornet' in Europe

Taiwanese superstar Jay Chou is known to have a busy life, juggling his time between singing, acting, directing and now hosting his very own television show ‘Mr J channel’. Yesterday, he took some time out of his busy schedule and flew to Europe to promote his upcoming Hollywood flick ‘The Green Hornet’ with the rest of the cast, including actress Cameron Diaz and director Michael Gondry. The film company specially organised a private jet, but it was limited to 16 seats, so Jay could only take his manager and hair stylist to accompany him.

Recently, Jay has been busy holding concerts for his World Tour, and thus he has already missed many promotional events for ‘The Green Hornet’ in Hollywood. Yesterday, he finally joined the rest of the cast to head to Europe to promote. They will be there for approximately one week, and will visit countries such as Spain, Germany and England.

Despite his already very full schedule, Jay is giving himself even more work. According to sources, he has already finished writing one of the songs for his new album, and has handed it over to his lyricist Vincent Fang. He also hopes to film the MV for the song during his trip to Europe.

‘The Green Hornet’ will be promoting in Asia in January next year.
