A brief recap of the winners at this year’s Golden Horse Awards

As reported earlier, Ethan Ruan took home Best Actor for his role in “Monga” at the 47th Golden Horse Awards. Some questioned if he had known about the win beforehand since he looked unusually calm on stage. He later denied that at the backstage interview, “I was pretending to be calm.” 28 year-old Ethan Ruan was in fact the first Taiwanese man to win Best Actor at the Golden Horse in 11 years.  He began his career as a model before successfully transitioning into an actor. Since his breakout role in Monga, Ruan is rumored to have turned down over 40 offers. Fortunately, it has now been confirmed that he will star in director Peter Chan’s new movie in January.

The highly competitive Best Actress category went to Lu Li Ping (pictured above) for her role in “City Monkey”. She played a single mother with high hopes for her son. Lu became tearful during her acceptance speech and said, “Thank you to the almighty God. Thank you Golden Horse Awards, for being so simple and beautiful. I’m 50 year-old this year, and the encouragement I receive from the Golden Horse makes me very happy, because it's not easy to be a filmmaker.”

The most nominated film, “When Love Comes”, won four awards including Best Picture. Interestingly, “The Fourth Portrait” also won four awards and even beat When Love Comes in the Best Taiwanese Film category. The Golden Horse committee was suspected of trying to “even things out”. They refuted the claim saying the Best Taiwanese film category recognizes films that have significantly contributed to the creativity of local productions.
