Monga replaces Hear Me as Taiwan's Oscar entry

It was only a week ago when the Government Information Office announced that Hear Me would represent Taiwan at the Oscars. The 2009 movie was later deemed ineligible for the Best Foreign Language Film category, because its release date was prior to the allowable period.  As a result, the GIO went back to their remaining finalists in search for a replacement.

They announced yesterday that Monga will be their new entry for Best Foreign Language Film. The movie starring Ethan Ruan and Mark Chao was a big hit at the box office earlier this year. It accumulated over $200 million NTD (6.24 million USD) in ticket sales before turning into a hot (illegal) download a few weeks after its release. GIO minister Johnny Chiang praised the movie for its local spirit and ability to connect with audience. Although Monga’s chances look pretty slim at the Oscars, it's already a winner for being selected by the GIO -- The film is now eligible for an additional 1.5 million NTD in promotional and public relations subsidy.
