Karena Lam rumored to be leaving showbiz for good

After starring in over 20 movies in the past decade, Karen Lam (林嘉欣) is said to be moving on from showbiz. The 32 year-old actress has rarely been seen since completing her latest movie Don Quixote. She was also missing from a press event on the 12th that was to premiere its trailer, and she has also declined to take part in the promotions for its November release.

The Vancouver-born actress began her career at 15 when she signed a 5-year contract with then-manager Jeremy Chang (張洪量). She moved to Taiwan against her parents’ wish, but her career came to a halt after a fall out with her manager over contract issues. After her contract ended, she signed with Hong Kong's Filmko Entertainment in 2001.

Karena Lam made her feature film debut in the critically acclaimed July Rhapsody, acting alongside Jacky Cheung and the late Anita Mui. She swept the Best Newcomer and Best Supporting Actress categories at both the Golden Horse and Hong Kong Film awards. She went on to receive five Best Actress nods from the HKFA for Inner Senses, The Floating Landscape, Koma, Home Sweet Home and Claustrophobia. Her 8-year contract with Filmko expired at the end of last year.

In addition to turning down a contract renewal, she reportedly asked the company not to accept anymore acting offers. The actress has since been on vacation and is said to be in Canada with her parents at this time. Some sources suggested that she might transition to a career in the arts, as she is interested in photography, architecture and ceramics.

Filmko issued a statement earlier today denying that she is leaving showbiz. They said that they still working with closely with Karena Lam but under a new format. The company said they will continue to look for interesting roles and CF's on her behalf.
