Dancer & R&B Singer Perform Duet of Will Pan’s “Dance for Two” on Super Idol

While Dora Wu & Ah Ga’s duet performance on the January 2nd’ Super Idol scored the highest points by the judges for their technical excellence, the crowd favorite definitely had to go to Mollie Chang (張依安 Chang Yi-an) and Stanley Huang (黃欣偉 Huang Hsin-wei) for their performance of Taiwanese pop favorite Will Pan’s 2009 hit “Pas de Deux (Dance for Two)”. It was definitely a welcome diversion, as a majority of the other pairings relied on powerful ballads to impress the judges on technical merit than as opposed to the riskier – and typically less successful – entertainment factor.

The original R&B tune was actually a solo performance by Will Pan, which featured a slick-looking MV that also starred Korean actress Lee Da Hae of My Girl and East of Eden fame in a scandalous love plot.  The Mollie and Stanley pair hoped to emulate the feeling of that MV in their live duet performance by incorporating a heavy dance element that had been missing in Super Idol since the departure of the entertaining yet musical-lacking Huang Shu-wen.

Both Mollie and Stanley arrived to Super Idol on contrasting paths, as Mollie is a newcomer to the talent show competition, while Stanley got his first exposure on one of the earlier season of rival talent show Million Star.  The Mollie and Stanley pairing was also an interesting dynamic, as Mollie has more of a dance that involves working in a dance studio, while Stanley prefers hitting it up on the piano for R&B melodies.  The song’s selection, chosen by Mollie for its technical ease and heavy dance component, was a safe choice and highly suited their styles.

It paid off in the end, as the judges and audience were impressed with Mollie’s sexy dancing and Stanley just going with the flow.  The judges complimented the entertaining performance and lavished praised on Mollie at the expense of Stanley, as they found Stanley’s performance a little too happy for being paired up with a hot dance partner.  The song choice also thankfully helped highlight the strengths of both singers, as the duo scored above the crucial 42 out of 50 points to guarantee safety from the judge’s elimination ax.  They’ll need it too, since the two’s weaknesses were exposed in the January 9th’s regular-themed episode.

Fortunately, the next episode on January 16 will be a cosplay-themed one, so the two can probably pull out some magic to take advantage of the show’s upcoming theme.  They’ll need that one, because their fellow competitors are really, really great singers.
